Tony Monaghan — ENS

A conflict is 'a disagreement where the parties involved perceive a threat to their needs, interests or concerns'. This definition implies that both parties can have different perceptions of any situation, and these will influence how we experience conflict and eventually impact the outcome of our negotiations. With this in mind, we can manage our reactions to the threat and dilemma posed by conflict. This means we can anticipate that there might be a misunderstanding of each other's perceptions, needs and emotions. This information gives us potential to understand and gain insight of the other party so we can handle the negotiation process and get the desired results.
